<image:title>Blog - Taking tea with death</image:title>
<image:caption>“Barn’s burnt down – Now I can see the moon” Mizuta Masahide What we learned in our Café Conversations: Talking about Death and Dying When we talk about death… we are often surprised to discover humour, warmth and energy in our conversations. When we step closer, pushing through our ambivalence, we can find that it is actually okay - that talking about death is even enjoyable and takes us to new questions and understandings about our lives. Some even find that in facing our death, we embrace what really matters to us and gives us new choices about living more fully. ‘Death is not waiting for us at the end of a long road. Death is always with us, in the marrow of every passing moment. She is the secret teacher hiding in plain sight. She helps us to discover what matters most. And the good news is we don’t have to wait until the end of our lives to realise the wisdom that death has to offer.’ Frank Ostaseski ,The Five Invitations. In our recent online Café Conversations at Oasis, we were joined by people keen to talk about their choices and wishes for care and treatment within the COVID-19 pandemic. Working with questions about what good care and a good death might look like in the changing context of lock-down, we explored our wishes for ourselves, for our friends and families; how to communicate our wishes to others and even how to start such notoriously difficult conversations. Conversations like these were hard enough before COVID-19, and become urgent and intense in these new, often heartbreaking circumstances, where people are dying alone and families cannot be with them nor attend their funerals. And we were all learning about taking these conversations online – each in our own houses, appearing in a box on a screen and yet still able to talk together about our intimate thoughts and feelings. What we learned through our Café Conversations was rich and inspiring. Topics ranged widely as each person talked about their own relationship with death and the challenges they now faced. For myself, I was moved by the openness and depth of conversation and the discoveries we made together. Jude Meryl from the Soul Midwives network, reflects on her experience of joining the Café Conversation: “The conversations I was involved in were on topic, diverse, deep and unexpectedly intimate, in our short time together: I felt as if I had been to a full weekend conference rather than engaged in a one and a half hour session. My first group, all there for a mixture of professional and personal reasons, discussed the benefits of having plans for our treatment, care and death in place. Initially rather hesitant, this conversation soon developed, with each of us asking some significantly searching questions, of ourselves and each other, about our personal experiences of death, and how best to live with uncertainty about what our own wishes actually were. My second group launched more directly into exploring how to help people put plans in place, and the difficulties that were arising for those who had made their plans, but whose family and friends were now, heart-breakingly, finding them rendered obsolete by the impact of the realities of COVID-19. I was deeply touched in our final plenary by those who had come to this Conversation Café specifically because of all that COVID-19 was bringing up, and who said simply and eloquently that it had been ‘good to talk’. My single word response to how I felt after the session was ‘inspired’ and, some weeks afterwards, I would still, and gratefully, want to stand by that description.” Interestingly, we found that the more we talked of our feelings about death, the easier it became. Pushing though our reluctance, we found that emotions which had kept us away from death, gave way, allowing us to move with and through them, and to engage more deeply and with more curiosity. Death was an engaging partner who showed us more questions and more dimensions to explore as the conversations developed. In the safety of shared, held space, we found that we could focus on what really matters to us as we think about what a good death might mean. For me, I noticed how the changing context of COVID-19 took me from my former wishes for a good death – pain free, at home, surrounded by people I love, music, colour, soft lighting….having said all my goodbyes, to a new slimmed down version…still pain free, almost certainly in hospital, in private preferably, with my husband there, but only if it was safe for him, and having already told people I loved them, and that I have lived a good life. And having stared into that possibility, I felt the trappings of my old life fall away as I can now imagine meeting death alone, stripped bare of the everyday stuff and my idealised images, leaving only my essential self as I surrender and go peacefully. At the end of the day what mattered to me was the safety of others and that I could leave peacefully and (preferably) still without pain. And maybe death has always been like this; it’s just that now I can see that more clearly for myself? In our conversations, we recognised the burden of making clear our wishes for ourselves and others – what do we want anyway? Can we look at our own death long enough to work out what matters to us? How do we tell others and does this place too much responsibility on them? How do we even start to ask our parents and our children about their wishes and our wishes? But conversely how much of a burden is it to not know what our loved ones want to happen? How many of us have made arrangements for others, trying to guess what they would like, maybe arguing in families with our different interpretations, usually driven by our own unacknowledged needs? And what we learned in our conversations, (even if we don’t really know what we want or cannot predict the circumstances), is that understanding and expressing what really matters to us can be a step in the right direction for ourselves and for others: from our view about what happens to us after death; to who we want alongside as we die; to ways of marking our departure - all of these choices are built on our values and deepest beliefs. Making explicit those values and beliefs will guide others in choosing what is done and how it is done, creating a bridge between our not knowing and our ideals. And talking about what really matters creates something even more precious... reconnecting with our love of life and living, and life force. These conversations nearly always led participants to feel energised, and more engaged in the joy of, and their commitment to, living. We laughed and cried together, relishing each other’s stories and concerns, respecting our dilemmas and smallest steps. Our conversations demonstrated the power of talking, feeling, thinking together, sharing silence and reflection space. Facing thoughts of our own death can clarify for us what it means to want to live well and fully. And so….what now? How do we journey on with death as our teacher? What else do we need to learn? From 30 years of sitting with people who are dying, Frank Ostaseski invites us to ‘sit down with death now, to have a cup of tea with her, to let her guide you toward living a more meaningful and loving life’. As we contemplate our own relationship with death and dying, and living fully, here are his five ‘heart lessons’ for living fully: Don’t wait – focus on the present and what we have in front of us right now Welcome anything, push away nothing – be willing to meet what comes and learn from it Bring your whole self to the experience – include and connect all parts of ourselves Find a place of rest in the middle of things – find the space and quiet within at all times Cultivate a ‘don’t know’ mind – be open and receptive; stay curious These are five ‘bottomless practices’ to be lived into, understood and realised through action. Frank Ostaseski says they are ‘reliable guides for coping with death’ … and to ‘living with integrity… five invitations for you to be fully present for every aspect of your life.’ Further questions… · What stands out for you in this article? · What matters to you in facing your death and embracing your life? · What is the truest and most beautiful life, and death, you can imagine for yourself? <image:title>Blog - Four themes & a rich picture</image:title>
<image:caption>Our second CEO and Senior Leader gathering took place on 4 June 2020, with the aim to stimulate sharing and learning across the most diverse group of leaders through this deeply challenging and remarkable period for us all. 30 leaders joined from the NHS, local government, charities, social enterprise, housing, finance, retail, construction, manufacturing, funeral services, and funding bodies. We also welcomed umbrella organisations representing wider networks, including small businesses and academic institutions. What emerged was a rich picture – have a look at the graphic above, which is a record of the gathering; and an energetic, gritty conversation with stories of people deeply engaged in thinking and responding to the pandemic and what it means for their organisations. There was an awkwardness expressed too, with people many of whom had never met before, getting on and connecting enough to share and explore together with a real diversity of views and responses. Following feedback from our first event for CEO’ on the 28 April, we shaped this session around some emerging themes in the hope that this would support participants to go deeper. The themes, (deliberately provocative), created a structure and some challenge for the ensuing conversations: · The future is feminine · There can be no going back to business as usual · Collaboration has no place in a COVID world · The balance of power has shifted We also ran some more open sessions, simply inviting people to ‘start from where you are’. There is so much that we could write and talk about from the second CEO gathering, and whilst the above graphic captures some of what emerged on the day, we want to highlight just a few things that stood out for us as hosts. Those exploring the future is feminine mused on those qualities that have resonated locally and globally that often have made a real difference in responses to the pandemic. Relational, empathic, a deeper emotional intelligence, a willingness to pause and draw others into a more inclusive conversation. “The emphasis wasn’t just on gender but on certain qualities that we’d like like to see represented and celebrated in organisations, government and society as a whole.” This connected with the work of another group exploring aspects of collaboration “Stay longer in the sense-making, democratise the conversation and dream more.” And at the same time, we heard about about some practical aspirations: “I would love the next session to be about collaborative working for those working at home. “ Exploring ‘not going back” stimulated much conversation about virtual and home working and its benefits and costs, both to real human contact and mental health. “How can we hold and develop deep connection and relationship, even at a distance?” emerged as a wonderful theme for ongoing inquiry. We heard “We need proportionate governance” as a powerful symbol for the work leaders are immersed in. And this was expressed in a conversation about risk assessment, long used as an important organisational tool but re-framed here also as a “comfort blanket.” Conversations emerged around working with polarities – an example being between control and creativity and how the crisis had seen a whole range of responses from people and organisations as they grappled with making sense and planning in such unique times. At the same time there was an expression of courage and boldness to be more innovative and entrepreneurial, and yet for some experiencing at the same time a cynicism that this was being done “under the cover of the crisis.” This conversation also included questions around pacing – those who were taking an organisational breath and making sense and those hungry to ‘re-imagine the future’ now, and paint the picture for themselves, organisations, communities, and the planet. This imperative from many to learn from this pandemic response and shape our organisations to better respond to questions of climate collapse, built further on our first session together in April. This seems to lead to question of Trust and integrity. How trust is unfolding as people step up in their new virtual ways of working and find their voice and place. And many people feeling freer to do their work and feeling trusted in doing so. Yet, this is set against wonderings about “will the hierarchy take back control?” And at a national political level there being a growing distrust of national governance and national guidance amidst an increasingly chaotic national and global context. And with Integrity “Integrity enfranchises leaders,” and “The future will be determined a lot by what we do now and how we behave as people exit lock down”. And importantly “opportunities for the future shaped by decisions made now.” And in fact “the future is now.” It was exciting to experience a group of senior leaders sharing what this expression of their own personal sense of integrity means for them and how this was being practised in their organisations. As we are seemingly moving further into a world of heightened uncertainty locally, regionally, nationally and globally, we witnessed amongst this group of senior leaders a real genuineness and open-heartedness to share learning, possibilities, dilemmas and anxieties. There will be a further CEO and Senior Leader gathering on 21 July and we want to shape this around the particular needs of CEO’s over the next six months to a year. At the same time we want to explore how we can continue to diversify the audience by attracting CEOs and sectors that we have yet to reach. <image:title>Reimagining the future</image:title>
<image:caption>Our ability to shape our future is only limited by our imagination and our ability to work together. If you’re a leader in the midst of crisis management, don’t even read this section. It will only irritate and frustrate. But when there is less pain and distress, it may awaken possibilities and options. At a systemic level there are changes that are proving healthier for the planet: allowing us to discover what is essential; reshaping the political and economic landscape; shifting social cohesion; sowing the seeds of significantly different ways of working. The changes are awakening imagination to what can be, because we are acting into a future that previously didn’t seem possible that is now already happening. As space eventually emerges from the frenetic doing, there will be a call to consider what the options are for our future. Such future thinking can be limited by a poverty of imagination, a reluctance to learn or an inability to turn away from the addiction of busyness. Without unlocking what could be, there will be a risk of the pretence of getting back to how things used to be, as if that were possible. There are processes that can help individuals, groups and organisations to make meaning of what is emerging and of what can be created together: to unlock future focussed creativity; to co-produce workable actions to make medium and long term change. Our imagination is only limited by how safe we feel to go further than before What we are facing is chillingly close to what has been acknowledged as a possibility for decades, just without the ability to be physically close. Meaningful action, greater connectivity and the ability for the person and the system to learn will be key to a resilient and more compassionate world. What can help? Allow the whole system to learn and innovate -utilise emerging methods to work with complexity through relationship. Use collective intelligence - establish inquiry cycles to address and resolve questions that don’t have ready-made answers. Be prepared to be wrong – and be open to new opportunities and atypical partnerships. Collaborate for innovation – participate in innovation cohorts, locally and globally. Make space to gather emerging trends and principles -learn whilst doing and apply co-discover methodologies, such as collaborative inquiry and facilitated futuring sessions, engaging single and multi-sectors. Find a critical friend – a ‘possibility catalyst’, a ‘what if’ approach - explore the art of the possible. Bring more of your whole self – your imagination, your creativity, your sense of humour, all you value and what you’ve learnt</image:caption>

<image:title>Reintegrating to the new normal</image:title>
<image:caption>Going back to before is not an option. Once the true impact of what we’ve been through is recognised, once it’s time to return to what there is, what then? It’s unlikely to be as easy as simply picking up where we left off. People don’t work like this and neither do the systems we live within. It will take time. There will be the uncertain challenges of further waves of infection. There will be government decisions and shifts in supply and demand. Customers, clients and the workforce will have developed new patterns of behaviour, as will each of us. When it’s time to implement a return and reintegration of people and ways of working, we’ll be faced with very human questions, such as How do I work with the new expectations and requests? Now it’s over, given what’s changed in me, how do I re -enter a very different world? How have I been treated and what’s next for me? How do I shape a space for authentic re-connection? How do we make sense of what’s been learned and what that might mean? What can help? Think ahead -how this phase is managed and held will shape our relationships for a long time. We’ll need to step back and to think and sense our way, without simply jumping to what used to work or the complexity of what will need to be. faced and the psychological impact this will have. Sustain the rhythm of connection Make meaning and allow as many people as possible to influence the changes that will impact them. Listen deeply Build in agility–leaders particularly are going to be called on to let go and embrace new possibilities. <image:title>Building Resilience</image:title>
<image:caption>Learning how to make falling down and getting back up again one action. Our whole system is being shaken - we are facing resilience questions in relation to ourselves: our livelihoods; the economy; environment; social stability; and political approaches. We know unerringly that people need people. One of our partners, The International Bateson Institute, expressed this beautifully: “ The more contact, interaction, interconnection, interdependence you are entwined in—the healthier, happier and safer you are.’” Learning how to keep learning whilst navigating uncertainty is the foundation of sustaining our resilience. Those for whom that is possible know how to look after themselves and do. They are prepared and ready to support others. But for many of us this isn’t the experience. We see isolation as risky: we seek interaction; we create structures to provide security; and when our structures break down, we feel vulnerable. What can help? Create rich virtual connection points – effective facilitated spaces for individuals or teams to relate to each other, allowing the connections, stories, needs and responses to unfold. Equip people to cope who don’t feel ready, are feeling overwhelmed, and are not even sure where to begin. Lasting change doesn’t come quickly. It is important to provide ongoing approaches that build new ways of coping over time. Find and develop bridges - people who can link, support and co-ordinate: who can facilitate others to find answers for themselves; shape more bespoke responses that are flexible, innovative and needs based. Strengthen your internal support systems – develop an internal coaching provision. Enable teams to function and collaborate in the most challenging of circumstances. Find team coaches who can work with high levels of uncertainty and unpredictability – it makes a tangible difference to managing the unknown. Develop practical strategies to be great at virtual teaming. Shape virtual services - mindful that technology will enable us to continue our relationship with our clients and communities, and at the same time bring challenges. Experiment and prototype to enable a more resilient future to emerge. Join a support network of like -minded and differently minded peers. Provide counselling and bereavement support to help people grieve and discover the first tentative steps towards healing. The grieving won‘t only be about our family and friends, it will be far wider as we learn to let go of aspects of our life and work we have held core to who we are. Communicate well - clearly, frequently, with warmth and in ways that reflect your values. To return to the five phases of Navigating Uncertainty click here</image:caption>

<image:title>Radical Reinvention</image:title>
<image:caption>It is easier to act our way into a new way of thinking, than to think our way into a new way of acting. There has never been a better time nor a greater need for new ideas and radical reinvention. This era presents immense opportunities to implement new ways of working that make sense for people and planet, that build resilience and connectivity, that reduce waste and contribute to establishing the world we want to create. Organisations and people who reinvent now will be pioneers of these new ways of working and will succeed over others-maybe! The risks are many, for just as quickly as we have changed over the last weeks and months, we may revert to how we worked before, taking solace and security in the familiar. We already know that what people turn to in the first few days, will be quickly forgotten. But some things may stick: such as a return to our true values; a greater confidence and skill at meaningful virtual conversations; and the acknowledgement that the internet is a utility not a luxury. There could be a reduction in unnecessary travel and environmentally damaging activities. It may be time for a more local and resilient supply of food and services. A different response to the calls for flexible working and childcare and the technology and skills to make them possible, and so on. What can help? Embed change through relationship–employ new practices that place people and planet at the heart of all you do Steal emergent ideas proudly–be connected across sectors and mindsets Develop agile leaders at all levels in your setting. Equip them to influence and facilitate change wherever they are Develop change makers, facilitators and coaches who can help transform potential energy for change into meaningful action Enable whole systems, organisations and people to learn through action–facilitate prototyping, ‘do-tanks’ and intrapreneurship Translate all that has been learnt into leading edge practice Be bold and embrace the previously unimaginable To return to the five phases of Navigating Uncertainty click here</image:caption>
